Finding The One (the dress, that is!) — Expert tips from Bayside Bridal

When it comes to wedding planning, few moments feel as iconic (and emotional!) as finding the dress. But with so many styles, designers, and boutiques out there, it can be hard to know where to start or how to make sure you’re getting the experience you deserve.

That’s why I sat down with Cassie, the face behind the magic at Bayside Bridal, a beloved bridal boutique known for their warm, welcoming service and seriously stunning collection of gowns. Whether you’re dreaming of something classic and timeless or bold and modern, Bayside Bridal has helped many brides find their perfect fit, and today Cassie shares her knowledge on what to look for in a bridal boutique, how to prepare for your appointment, and what really makes a dress shopping experience special.

So if you’re about to dive into dress shopping and want to feel confident, calm, and maybe even a little glam along the way - keep reading!

1. What sets your bridal boutique apart from others, and how would you describe the experience brides can expect when they visit?

At Bayside Bridal, it’s all about you. We're a private, by-appointment-only boutique in Redland Bay, which means when you come in, the space is entirely yours - no other brides, no distractions, just a relaxed, cosy vibe where you can truly enjoy the moment.

I’ll be there every step of the way to guide and support you, without any pushy sales tactics. It's a calm, fun and uplifting experience - like shopping with your bestie who happens to know a thing or two about wedding dresses! My goal is to make you feel beautiful, confident, and totally at ease.

2. How far in advance should a bride start looking for her dress, and what’s the ideal timeline from first appointment to final fitting?

I usually recommend starting your dress search about 10–12 months before your wedding. That gives us plenty of time to explore your style, order your gown, and book in alterations without rushing. Most of our designers take about 4–6 months to create your dress, and fittings usually start 2–3 months before your big day.

But if you’re on a shorter timeline - don’t stress! I also have gorgeous ready-to-wear options for brides who need something sooner. There’s always a way, and we’ll make it work together.

3. What are your top tips for brides who have no idea what style of dress they want?

You’re not alone - so many brides walk in saying “I have no clue what I’m looking for!” And that’s totally okay. My advice? Come in with an open mind and let’s have a bit of fun with it. Try different styles, even ones you wouldn’t usually pick. You might be surprised by what you fall in love with!

I’ll be there to guide you through it all and help you figure out what feels right. It's not about following trends - it’s about finding your dress that makes you feel like the best version of yourself.

4. How can brides balance their personal style with what flatters their body shape? Are there any common misconceptions about certain silhouettes?

Honestly, the most important thing to know is: you are not a size, and your worth is not a number on a tag. At Bayside Bridal, we don’t label or judge - there’s no “plus-size” or “petite” section here. Every gown is just a dress, and every bride is welcome to try them all. Bridal sizing is wildly inconsistent and often outdated - it can leave brides feeling confused or even a bit deflated, which breaks my heart. That’s why I never focus on the number. I care about how you feel in the dress.

We’ll explore styles together, based on what makes you feel beautiful - not what someone says “suits your shape.” You might surprise yourself and fall in love with something you never expected. The whole point is to honour you - your style, your vibe, and your comfort. When you find a dress that lights you up from the inside, that’s what truly flatters your body.

5. What should a bride bring (or wear) to her dress appointment to make the most of the experience?

Nude or seamless underwear is always a good idea, and if you have a strapless bra, feel free to bring it - but don’t worry if you don’t, most gowns are structured enough on their own. If you’ve already picked your wedding shoes, bring them along too.

Most importantly, bring your cheer squad - those few people who lift you up, support your decisions, and will make the experience even more special. Oh, and maybe a little inspo if you have some - but no pressure! We’ll figure it out together.

6. Many brides want to personalise their dress - what types of customisations or alterations are typically possible?

Absolutely, and I love when brides want to make a dress truly their own! There are so many ways we can add a personal touch - think extra sparkle, custom sleeves, adding or removing straps, swapping a zip for a lace-up back, or even blending elements from two gowns into one. Whether it’s adjusting the neckline, changing the train length, or adding a romantic overskirt for a second-look vibe, it’s all possible.

I work closely with local seamstresses and designers who specialise in alterations and custom tweaks to bring your vision to life. Your dress should feel like you, and we’ll help make that happen.

7. What current bridal fashion trends are you seeing, and do you think there are any timeless styles that will always be in demand?

Right now, I’m seeing a lot of soft, romantic elements - think floaty sleeves, low backs, 3D floral appliqué, and earthy tones like champagne and mocha instead of traditional bright white. There’s also a big rise in minimalist styles with clean lines and luxe fabrics for that modern-yet-timeless look. Boho coastal vibes are very on-trend too, which is perfect for our Queensland brides!

As for timeless styles - there’s something so classic about an A-line silhouette, structured bodices, and lace detailing. They never go out of fashion. The key is choosing something that feels true to your personality, not just what’s trending. If you love it now, you’ll love it when you look back in 30 years’ time.

8. What advice do you have for brides trying to stick to a budget while still finding a dress they love?

You absolutely don’t have to spend a fortune to feel like a million dollars. One of my favourite things is helping brides find a dress that fits both their style and their budget. I stock a carefully curated range of gowns at different price points, and we also offer custom-made dresses that work to your budget without compromising on quality or beauty. Be honest about your budget from the start (there’s no judgment here, ever), and we’ll work together to find the perfect gown within it.

I always say: don’t get caught up in price tags - fall in love with how you feel, not how much it costs. If you fall in love with the one and it’s a little over budget - don’t stress! At Bayside Bridal, we offer flexible payment plans tailored to suit you, so you can say yes to your dream dress with confidence and kindness to your wallet.

9. Beyond the dress itself, what other costs should brides factor in - such as alterations, accessories, or preservation?

Great question - and such an important one! It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget about the “extras.” Alterations are almost always needed to get that perfect fit, and costs can vary depending on the work involved, so it’s good to allow a few hundred dollars in your budget for that.

Don’t forget your veil, jewellery, shoes, and any shapewear or undergarments you might want on the day. If you’re thinking ahead, you might also want to preserve your dress after the wedding - especially if you’re sentimental or plan to pass it down one day.

10. If you could give one piece of advice to every bride about wedding dress shopping, what would it be?

Trust yourself. Not your Pinterest board. Not the opinions of ten different people. Just you. Your dress doesn’t need to impress anyone else - it only needs to make you feel incredible. You’re the VIP on your wedding day, so don’t get caught up in what you think you should wear or what everyone else is doing.

When you find the gown that gives you butterflies, the one that makes you smile without even trying - that’s it. That’s your dress. Once you feel that moment, it’s okay to cancel the rest of your appointments. Don’t stress about FOMO - chances are, you’ve already found the one. Chasing “what if” can take the magic out of what was already perfect. And remember, it’s never about perfection. It’s about joy.
